ES Renovations for Summer 2012

August 9, 2012

We are closing in on probably the busiest 4 weeks in the summer schedule for construction, please pray for the continued safety for all the workers at both campuses, and for patience and wisdom for those planning and making decisions.

We are very much looking forward to unveiling all the new and improved spaces and equipment for our students - a heartfelt thank you to all who have and continue to support CCS to make it all possible.

The foundation has begun for the new classrooms at the ES, and all the interior work is on schedule for the beginning of the school year!

The Secondary showers are completed and the furniture has been ordered for the Commons to create the lunchroom space.

Please continue to pray for the work being done as we prepare for the fall.

Everything is happening at once! The ES school work is well underway, the ground is prepped for foundation work on the new classrooms, and the field is almost ready for our new playground.

The Secondary showers are tiled and looking great, the Commons has a beautiful new paint job, High School classrooms upstairs have been renovated to make them bigger and brighter...WOW!

It's almost hard to keep track of the changes and all the places that will be new and improved for 2012-2013.

We covet your continued prayers for safety and success as all this work is done in anticipation of our students returning in September; stay tuned for more updates!

What a difference a few days makes!

The High School Commons area is empty and well on its way to having great new colours and design - already a dramatic transformation, even in midstream!

Secondary shower stalls have walls, drains, roughed-in plumbing...looks great!

The maintenance crew has been working at a breakneck speed to empty classrooms and start the annual summer scrub-down, as well as making way for the renovations and expansion at the Elementary.

There are several flurries of activity happening simultaneously, and there will continue to be all through our summer break.

Stay tuned for further updates and some pictures of everything that's being accomplished - the Building Permit has been approved and the serious construction is soon to come!

Ladies and Gentlemen

As we approach the beginning of our construction for the Elementary School addition, we wanted to provide an update to the project as well as the updated budget. We have had a long and interesting journey in the application for a development permit, and with all of the new requirements in the process, we have had to engage a few additional steps along the way.

Although we hoped that a DSSP (Detailed Site Services Plan) would not be required, the City has requested such a report, and further delayed the process of our application for a Building Permit.

In addition, and at time of Development application review, there is a need of building an additional cinderblock wall as a firewall between the existing building and the new structure. Further, we have a need for more washrooms in the building to bring us up to code. These items were not contemplated  in our original budget.

As a Society, you have approved a mortgage against the property of $1.5M for this renovation. Our adjusted total, based on the additional items as described above, will now approach $1.8M. Along with the architect and project manager, we will continue to be diligent and stewardly with the impact to our operating budget.

With a revised timeline, we are looking to begin school in September with all of the interior renovations completed in our existing structure, and looking to October/November to open the new wing to classes.  The playground and sport area will be ready sometime in August for activity. You can keep up to date with everything this summer on our website, simply look for the construction information section link next to the picture of the hard hat!

Have a terrific summer and we look forward to seeing you in the fall!

In HIS service,

Scott Hickling

Executive Director

With the resounding approval of our Society Members in May, and the approval of our Development Permit with the City of Calgary, we are underway!

Final preparations are being put in place and scheduling determined for the construction of our new classrooms and interior renovations at the Elementary School. The application for a Building Permit has been made and is the final step required prior to work commencing.

The dismantling of the current playground has begun, and the new structures will be in place for the 2012-2013 school year start on September 4.

Watch for all the exciting changes to our ES over the summer, including the sports fields, entry off 49 Street and those much needed classrooms. This is an exciting time for CCS, and we covet your prayers as we prepare for construction.

The showers and creation of a lunchroom space at the Secondary Campus will also be ready for September for our students in Grades 7 - 12.

April 2012

The reenrollment of our current students and new applications (especially at the Kindergarten level) has caused a need for addressing classroom space.  While we were able to house our students in the existing classrooms last year, we have simply outgrown that space and need to create new learning environments for fall 2012.

Here are a number of the key considerations for this phase:

  • Increasing the physical classroom space for Kindergarten through Grade 3 classrooms to allow for a more conducive learning environment beyond some current classroom size restrictions

  • Improvements in fresh air circulation and HVAC system to the remainder of the upper level (initial improvements were completed to half the building in Phase 1)

  • Movement of asphalt basketball court and lower playground in conjunction with the building addition

Funding this planned expansion requires responsibility and stewardship. Recommendations point to the use of financing through an asset-base line of credit - an opportune time, as borrowing costs are very low and affordable.

Projections for this phase indicate that this will not impact Christian Program Fees, and the practice of timely payment of principal and interest that has allowed for our current debt to be minimal will continue.

In order to arrange for this funding, and meet deadlines for construction to allow for a September completion date, the approval of Society members is required.  Please click here for some questions and answers as provided at the March meeting of School Council.
