The sun does get up early in Belize. As I write, it is now just 6 AM and I have been up for the past hour listening to macaws, dogs, monkeys and a variety of jungle sounds greeting the warmth of the sun.
Yesterday was the first full day at YWAM and the students got a taste of things they would never have done at home. We started off by working the joys of painting walls, washing buildings, moving construction materials, making homemade tortilla bread and eating iguana. Just kidding about the iguana, although it might just happen as there are a number of them around camp.
After working in the morning, we ventured off to a ranch close by called Banana Bank. It is operated by a Mr. John Carr, formerly of Montana. Some of the history buffs will recognize that name from the first Calgary Stampede days. He is a character, and continues to provide for Belize in a number of ways from cattle and black bean cropping, to mahogany and teak forests.
On one of the boat tours, we managed to see live action of a boa snake and an eagle in mortal combat. The eagle had a firm grasp on the snake and was fighting with it from the top of one of the large trees all the way to the jungle floor. After some time, the snake managed to get free and swam across the front of our boat to the far shore. We will be posting photos after the trip!
Monkeys up in trees, lots of birds and wildlife and then the horseback riding tour through the ranch, followed by an authentic and amazing dinner.
Devtion time followd with full participation and a great presentation on prayer and its powers.
Funny how darkness at 6:30 pm can create the sense of midnight. What's that old adage... early to bed and early to rise? Well we have half of that right!
Today we are at YWAM in the morning and then off to the orphanage in the afternoon to meet and greet our new charges!
There is a sense of community here among the group that is a great chemistry and all of the leaders are proud to be a part of this.
Blessings on this happy day,
Scott
