Seeing my son kneel in prayer was rewarding. Watching his team thank God for the opportunity and skills to win provincials reinforces the Christian values we are teaching our children in our home, at school and at church. They didn’t jump around looking for glory. They first bowed their heads and prayed. What a moment.”

Walking the halls, it won’t take you long to hear laughter and cheers as volleyballs whiz through the air and basketballs swish through the net at Calgary Christian School (CCS). Athletics is an important part of our school culture, and we are proud of the success our athletes have had both off and on the court.

CCS has been a major player in the athletic scene for over 30 years, representing the Calgary Zone at ASAA provincial championships virtually every year since the early 1980s. Successful league play and provincial-level success have earned recognition for our school’s abilities.

More importantly, competing against public schools in these competitions has given us opportunities to witness by demonstrating what it means to be a Christian athlete. For us, the Sportsmanship banner from the 2001-2002 boys’ volleyball provincials acknowledges the Christian focus we strive for with every team that represents our school.

At CCS, extracurricular athletics is about more than producing star athletes. It is about honouring God above all else and celebrating the gifts of others before your own. It is about choosing friendship and integrity over championships and working hard to achieve a goal. It is about winning with humbleness and losing with grace. In doing all these things, CCS not only develops star athletes but men and women of character as well.
